Baguio Mayor Alarmed Due To Rising COVID-19 Mortality Rate In City

BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Benjamin Magalong became concerned due to the rising COVID-19 mortality rate in the city.

Currently, the death toll due to the new coronavirus has risen by 40% in less than a month. As such, Benjamin tasked the City Health Services (CHSO) to coordinate with medical experts along with the Department of Health in order to find a solution to prevent causalities because of the virus.

We cannot just leave it at that. We have to do something. Let’s set a roadmap on how to address the death incidence and let’s arrest it, said the Mayor. Meanwhile, according to an article from Manila Bulletin, CHSO officer Dr. Rowena Galpo noted an increase in the number of COVID-19 related deaths.

Back on December 14, 2020, the city reported 48 deaths related to the virus. However, this number increased to 71 as of January 5. On average, this meant that there was at least one person who died per day in the past three weeks. Furthermore, this raised the city’s mortality rate to 1.77 percent.

Additionally, Galpo said most of the fatalities were either declared dead-on-arrival or brought in too late. Moreover, most of the patients who succumbed to the disease were seniors with pre-existing medical conditions.

As per the article, Galpo stated:

Our utmost concern now is to protect the vulnerable and they are our elderly and persons with underlying conditions so everyone must adhere to the health standards and see to it that they do not bring the virus to their homes and to their loved ones who are vulnerable

She emphasized that early consultation and detection may lead to early medical intervention and a better chance of recovery. “We have to seek consultation early if we want our loved ones especially the elderly“, Galpo added.
