Cop Paid For Shoplifters’ Christmas Dinner Instead Of Pressing Charges
COP PAID FOR SHOPLIFTERS – Instead of pressing charges, a police officer paid shoplifters’ Christmas dinner in Somerset, Massachusetts.
Just a few hours before Christmas eve, a supermarket called police to report a shoplifting incident taking place. The officer who responded to the call was known as Matt Lima.
When he arrived at the scene, Lima saw two women with two kids allegedly not scanning several items before placing them in their grocery bags. As it was a self-checkout corner, receipts revealed many of the items weren’t paid for.
After speaking to the suspects, Lima discovered that the women didn’t have enough money to pay for their items. Furthermore, he found out that the food they were trying to shoplift was for a Christmas dinner for their children.
Afterward, Lima gave them a “no trespass” order. However, he decided not to press any charges against them. Instead, he used his own money and bought gift cards so the women can buy groceries at another store. According to an article from Unilad, the officer said:
Obviously, this family was in need, and I can’t imagine having to make the decision to go to Stop & Shop and just only pay for what I can afford – or do I go there and try to take things for Christmas dinner for the kids?
They were very thankful; they were kind of shocked. I’m sure a lot of people in that same situation would be thinking that there was going to be a different outcome, and maybe they would be arrested or have to go to court.
