What Is Regolith? About The Region Of Rock And Dust
REGOLITH – In this topic, we are going to know and learn about a regioin of rock and dust known as a regolith.
As mentioned above, it is a region of rock and dust that sits on top of a layer of bedrock. On Earth, this also includes soil.
The Encyclopedia Britannica says that the region serves as a source of other geologic resources like aluminum, iron, clays, diamonds, and rare earth elements.
This layer also appears on the surfaces of the Moon, as well as other planets an asteroids.
The term is Greek for “blanket rock”. It is a combination of the term rhēgos or ‘rug, blanket‘, and lithos or ‘stone‘.
In the case of that of Earth’s, the layer is the result of weathering. The bedrock may be exposed to water or other compounds that perlocate through the soil or may occur as an outcrop .
The chemicals can alter the mineral content of the rock over time, which breaks down some material into smaller components and separating it from the layer.
The bedrock itself can also become regolith caused by the mechanical weathering, which is a process that breaks the rock into smaller pieces.
In the case of that of the Moon’s, it occurs as a mixture of powdery dust and broken rock. It is formed by the impact of meteorites on the body’s surface.
