Waiving Safeguards On Poll Equipment Gateway To Election Fraud Says Lawyer

WAIVING SAFEGUARDS ON POLL EQUIPMENT – When it comes to elections, surely you’d want a safe and secure election.

However, an election lawyer recently raised concerns as a provision was inserted into next year’s budget plan that waives safeguards on poll equipment for the 2022 elections. During an interview with ANC, lawyer Emil Marañon said the proposal posed a serious threat to the fairness of the elections.

For me, this is a very dangerous proposal considering the fact the moment you make an election system less secure and more susceptible to fraud, then this is actually a threat to democracy

Additionally, he asked why you’d make the election system less secure. Furthermore, he asserted that his could be the foundations of a massive fraud in the next election if this was allowed.

Meanwhile, the Senate had confirmed such a provision in the 20201 budget proposal. Luckily, they said they already plan to block it as it was deemed unconstitutional.

But, they have yet to reveal the name of the lawmaker who passed such a proposal to allow the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to waive test and certification for automated poll security.

As per the interview, Marañon said:

For me, this is very dangerous, this is sneaky. Ano po masyadong traydor ang pagkakagawa nito if in case maging successful sila because behind everyone’s back, you actually insert a provision, which will have a vital effect and can endanger the election system

Moreover, he asserted that the Senate president and those who know the name of the Senator who proposed the change are obliged to disclose the name to the public.
