Ex-NDFP Peace Negotiator Arrested In Misamis Oriental

MISAMIS ORIENTAL – A former peace negotiator of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) was nabbed in Misamis Oriental.

According to a report from GMA News, the Police Regional Office XIII has said that the NDFP peace negotiator, identified as Alfredo “Pares” Mapano was arrested in Barangay Casinglot in Tagoloan town.

This followed after two warrants of arrest were served against Mapano for the crimes of robbery in band and carnapping.

The arrest warrant of robbery in band was issued by the Regional Trial Court Branch 7 of Bayugan City, Agusan del Sur on October 9, 2019. The warrant was with a recommended bail worth P100,000.

As for the arrest warrant for carnapping, this was issued by RTC Branch 10 of Malaybalay City in December 19, 2017. This was also with a recommended bail of P100,000.

Mapano was working as a security officer at Phividec Industrial Authority. He was also the former secretary of North Central Mindanao Regional Committee (NCMRC), the Mindanao Commission of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA).

The ex-negotiator also had a P5,300,000 bounty on his head, the police added.

Based on the report, Caraga police chief Police Brigadier General Romeo Caramat has commended the personnel who arrested the suspect. Caramat also urged the remaining communist rebels to surrender to authorities.

In a separate statement on Sundat, the Philippine Ecumenical Peace Platform (PEPP) said that the arrest of Mapano brings doubt on the sincerity of the government’s call for communist rebels to lay down their arms and return to the folds of law.

Mapano was pursuing armed struggle for nearly 30 years. He was nabbed in 2009 and was imprisoned for seven years at the Misamis Oriental Provincial Jail due to several cases.

He participated as a negotiator in the peace talks with the government in 2017. He decided to surrender to the govvernment when the peace process did not prosper.
