Miss Universe Colombia Organization released a statement
Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray was one of the judges in Miss Universe Colombia 2020 and the organization released an apology due to the issue that was brought out during the event.
It is no wonder that the popularity of Catriona has rose in just an instance when she was crowned as the fourth Pinay Miss Universe. The world of pageantry has definitely recognized her achievement as she gets invited to grace the national pageants of many countries.
The recent invitation that Catriona got was from Colombia as a judge. However, things that were not expected occurred. Her name was misspelled when she was announced as a judge. Instead of Gray, it was spelled “Garay”.
Then, the host introduced her as Australian who represented the Philippines. Because of this, fans of Catriona expressed dismay but the beauty queen stressed in her Instagram post that she’s a “Filipina.”
In line with the controversy, the Miss Universe Colombia Organization released a statement to apologize to Catriona Gray, based on the article from Bandera.
MUCO President and National Director Natalie Ackerman apologized for and explained what happened during the pageant night.
“We also would like to express our apologies for the mistake of her last name due to some language barrier and the announcement that she was born in Australia – the translated language that was sent for introduction is ‘Born in Australia, from the Philippines who is Miss Universe 2018’ it is honestly part of the cultural differences as here in Colombia, we regard the value of unity and cross-cultural importance,” she said.
The pageant director also said that there was no malice intended. They invited Catriona because they believe in Filipinos. Ackerman also shared that she has a personal friend who is based in Dubai and she admires the culture and kindness of Filipino people.
“I hope that Catriona Gray will not take this matter against us and can forgive us and our management. We are absolutely thrilled to visit the beautiful country of the Philippines soon,” the Miss Universe Colombia Organization head added.
