Academic Freeze In Typhoon-Hit Areas – DepEd Asked For Suspension

DepEd Called On To Implement Academic Freeze in Typhoon-Hit Areas

ACADEMIC FREEZE – A teacher’s group called on the Department of Education to declare an “Academic Freeze” in Typhoon-hit areas.

Several groups have called for the declaration of an academic freeze amid the severe calamities that befell the Philippines. This includes several faculty members of the University of the Philippines schools.

They proposed a scheme wherein a “Pass or Drop” system would be imposed. This would help both students and teachers adapt and give leeway to people residing in flood-ravaged areas.

Meanwhile, according to the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition, although DepEd’s “academic ease” was a good idea, there were still areas that remain flooded. Furthermore, water and electricity have yet to be restored in most areas.

As per the interview, the teachers’ groups’ Chairman, Benjo Basas stated:

“It would be better kung talagang merong declaration na sasabihin ang Department of Education…dun sa mga areas lang naman po na affected talaga

Furthermore, during an interview with TeleRadyo, he said that a lot of teachers and students still depended on things damaged by the Typhoons and floods. This included modules and equipment such as laptops, and phones. However, with the recent flooding, this has become a privilege only left for a few, especially in flood-hit areas.

Unfortunately, DepEd is still highly unlikely to declare an academic freeze. Meanwhile, the Commission on Higher Education recently said that it would be up to the schools if they wanted to declare a suspension of classes.
