Lea Salonga was afraid when Donald Trump became President
Internationally-acclaimed Broadway star Lea Salonga revealed the fear that she felt when Donald Trump was elected President in 2016.
Lea is one of the Pinoy celebrities who supported newly-elected US President Joe Biden, the opponent of former President Trump. For the singer-actress, going to the US has been part of her annual routine due to her shows and other engagement.
However, for the first time in 2016, Lea said that she felt afraid going to the US when Trump assumed the presidency, based on the article from Bandera.
“Four years ago… where was I four years ago… ‘Fun Home’ was having a tech run… and everyone was banned from turning on their phones for its duration until after curtain call. We all got the news at the same time, and that unfamiliar sense of dread and fear went through me,” the Broadway diva recalled.
As an Asian and a Filipina, Lea Salonga felt a certain fear. The same fear was also felt by her daughter.
“I’m a woman of color that spends plenty of time in the United States. My daughter is growing up to be a woman of color, an actual Asian-American,” she said.
Lea also recalled that in 2017, she even asked her manager if it was safe for her to go to the US because of an engagement.
“It was the first time I actually felt apprehension walking in the streets of one of the biggest melting pots in the world, New York City. I felt I had to constantly look over my shoulder to make sure I was far enough away from people so as not to get attacked,” the singer-actress revealed.
Apparently, this is the reason why Lea Salonga was so thankful that Joe Biden got elected and she really supported him. She said that she can go back to the US, but not yet due to the pandemic, without being worried that she is being watched and that she might be harmed.
