FILIPINO PROVERBS – In this topic, we are going to learn and read some of the examples of Tagalog or Filipino proverbs.
Proverbs are defined as simple, concrete, traditional sayings that express a truth based on common sense or experience. They are often metaphorical and use formative language. In the Philippines, they are known as salawikain.
Examples
We are now going to read some of the examples of Filipino proverbs or salawikain:
- “Malakas ang bulong sa sigaw” | Low words are stronger than loud words.
- “Nagpuputol ang kapus, ang labis ay nagdurugtong.” | What is short cuts off a piece from itself, what is long adds another on. (The poor gets poorer, the rich richer.)
- “Ang may isinuksok sa dingding ay may titingalain.” | He who has put something between the wall may afterwards look on (the saving man may afterwards be cheerful).
- “Sa bibig nahuhuli ang isda.” | The fish is caught through the mouth.
- “Ang naglalakad ng marahan, matinik may mababaw.” | He who walks slowly, though he may put his foot on a thorn, will not be hurt very much.
- “Matibay ang walis, palibhasa’y magkabigkis.” | A broom is sturdy because its strands are tightly bound.
- “Mahirap gisingin ang nagtutulog-tulugan.” | It is hard to wake up someone who is pretending to be asleep.
- “Mahirap mamatay ang masamang damo.” | Weeds are difficult to kill.
- “Walang naninira sa bakal kundi sariling kalawang.” | Nothing destroys iron but its own corrosion.
- “Magsisi ka man at huli wala nang mangyayari.” | There is no need to cry over spilt milk.
