There are five known oceans, namely:

  • Pacific Ocean
    • It is the largest and deepest ocean of Earth. This extends from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south. Its name was coined by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan during the Spanish circumnavigation of the world in 1521, naming it Mar Pacífico. which means “peaceful sea”.
  • Atlantic Ocean
    • The second largest ocean which extends from the Southern Ocean between the Americas, and Africa and Europe, to the Arctic Ocean. Its oldest mentions come Stesichorus who called it Atlantikôi pelágei, which means the sea of Atlantis.
  • Indian Ocean
    • the third largest, which extends northward from the Southern Ocean to India, the Arabian Peninsula, and Southeast Asia in Asia, and between Africa in the west and Australia in the east. It is named for India and has been known by this name since 1515.
  • Arctic Ocean
    • the smallest and shallowest of the five. It is also the coldest oceans and is known as Arctic Mediterranean Sea.
  • Southern Ocean
    • Known as the Antarctic Ocean or the Austral Ocean, this comprises the southernmost waters of the World Ocean, and the second-smallest of the five.
