What Is Mammalogy? About The Branch Of Biology
MAMMALOGY – In this topic, we are going to know and learn about a science branch of biology known as mammalogy.
It is known as a branch of biology which deals with the study of mammals. The branch covers fields like structure, function, evolutionary history, ethology, taxonomy, management and economics of mammals.
The fields at about 4,200 species of living mammals and numerous extinct species, which includes the echidnas, platypus, marsupials, and more, among others.
This field is as divers as the species it studies, according to About Bio Science. Those who study this field are known as mammalogists, who might also study a wide variety of topics on a certain species or group of mammals or take a comparative approach and investigate one aspect with regard to a variety of mammals.
Branches
Among the subbranches of this study include the following:
- Natural History
- Refers to a species’ way of life, which includes descriptions of the habitats in which it lives, the food it eats, the predators that eat it, the stages of its maturation and reproduction and its social structure.
- Taxonomy and Systematics
- Refers to the study of the classification of mammals into distinct orders, families, genera, species and subspecies. This also defines the geographic distribution of each taxon.
- Anatomy and Physiology
- Refers to the study of mammalian body structures and tissues, as well as their functions.
- Ethology
- This branch studies the behavior of an animal and their influence on its survival and reproduction.
- Ecology
- Refers to the study of interactions between mammals and their environments.
- Management and Control
- It is a study of the interactions between humans and other mammals where humans manipulate either the environment or populations of mammals.
