The etching was discovered while they were conducting maintenance work in one of the UNESCO heritage site, according to the New York Times.

They captured an image, stretching for 40 yards on a hillside in Peru, showing a creature with pointy ears, orb-like eyes and a long striped tail. resembling a cat that seems to be lounging.

Archaeologists discovered the etching while they were remodeling a section of Nazca Lines, according to the Ministry of Culture in Peru.

The etching, which dates back to 200 B.C. to 100 B.C. is the recent discovery among carvings of larger-than-life animals and plants which were found between the towns of Nazca and Palpa in a desert plain about 250 miles southeast of the Lima, the capital of Peru.

“The discovery shows, once again, the rich and varied cultural legacy of this site,”

The lines were first found by a surveyor in 1927. Unearthed there were images of a hummingbird, a monkey and an orca. UNESCO designated the lines a World Heritage Site since 1994.

The recent discovery was said to be older than any of the prehistoric geoglyphs that were unearthed at the said town.

Johny Isla, Peru’s chief archaeologist in the sites, admitted that it was striking that they were able to find new figures, adding that there are more to be found, based on the report.

“It’s quite striking that we’re still finding new figures, but we also know that there are more to be found,”

The designs were said to have been created when ancient Peruvians scraped off a dark and rocky layer of earth, which contrasts with lighter-colored sand underneath. The etchings were said to have served as travel markers/.
