PDRRMO Urges Negros Occidental LGUs To Prepare For La Niña
NEGROS OCCIDENTAL – The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office urges Negros Occidental LGUs to prepare for La Niña.
According to Panay News, Dr. Zeaphard Caelian, head of PDRRMO, cited the warning from Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) that La Niña may develop in October or November 2020.
La Niña is characterized by below-normal sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean near the equator due to the shifting wind patterns in the atmosphere..
“Although it is expected to be weak to moderate, every La Niña is different and may still bring adverse effects,”
He added that eight typhoons are expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility this year.
In the municipality of Cauayan and Sipalay City last week, several families were evacuated after rivers overflowed due to heavy rains.
Caelian added that local governments should place evacuation centers separate from isolation centers for COVID-19 patients, based on the report.
Physical distancing and other minimum health protocols should still be strictly observed.
Meanwhile, PAGASA said that on this day, Tropical storm Nangka (locally named Nika) was last spotted at about 750 kilometers west of northern Luzon.
It is packed with maximum sustained winds of 85 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 105 kilometers per hour. It is moving westward at 20 kilometers per hour.
Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao will face cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to LPA and the southwest monsoon.
Metro Manila and the rest of the country will face partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers due to the southwest monsoon and localized thunderstorms.
