Cebu Mayor Announces Karaoke Prohibited During Weekdays
KARAOKE PROHIBITED DURING WEEKDAYS – Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella announced an ordinance that prohibits Karaoke and other loud noises during weekdays.
Along with this, Labella also coordinated with the City Legal Office on banning karaoke singing and gatherings such as parties that could attribute to noise pollution in residential areas. According to Labella, he wanted to give students who are studying from home optimal learning conditions by providing peace and quiet so they could focus.
Labella had also admitted receiving complaints regarding noise caused by Karaoke during daytime parties. This caused major disturbances to people working from home, especially to students conducting online classes.
Recently, public schools officially launched the start of the school year 2020-2021. With that in mind, it becomes more apparent that noise pollution could greatly affect the learning process of students, especially with the new format.
Based on an article from Inquirer, Labella stated:
We have ordinances for public disturbance and public noise. I asked the City Legal to compile them so we can implement these during this time of the pandemic
Meanwhile, Labella emphasized that he doesn’t intend to disallow people from enjoying themselves and having fun in the comfort of their homes. However, he asserted that residents of their respective communities should keep in mind the other people in the community.
Labella also noted that this may be a large adjustment for some. As such, he highlighted that it is empirical for all Cebuanos to be patient and understanding amid the global pandemic.
