A waterfall is a body of water where the water flows over a vertical drop or a series of steep drops in the course of a stream or river.

They also happen where meltwater (water from melted snow or ice) drops over the edge of a tabular iceberg or ice shelf.

Types

It is classified into 10 different types, according to World Atlas, namely:

  • Punchbowl Waterfall
    • This type has a wide catch pool at the bottom of the fall. It is also mostly tranquil and is generally easy to swim.
  • Plunge Waterfall
    • This waterfall drops in a vertical flow and loses contact with the exposed bedrock.
  • Multi-step Waterfall
    • This one is among the most beautiful forms of falls. This is due to their series of waterfalls dropping water onto one sunken pool after another.
  • Horsetail Waterfall
    • This type keeps contact with the hard rock behind it as it surges down to its pool. It is a more common waterfall and nearly found everywhere in many countries.
  • Frozen Waterfall
    • It is a waterfall which occurs when winter freezes the water for the duration of the season.
  • Fan Waterfall
    • This waterfall produces fan-like shape, hence the name as the water descends into its pool below.
  • Chute Waterfall
    • A pressurized waterfall which occurs due to a large volume of water going through a very narrow passage, creating a very strong waterfall current.
  • Cataract Waterfall
    • The most powerful of falls and has the strongest water currents. The wild waters there emit that familiar thunderous sound
  • Cascade Waterfall
    • This waterfall has a series of rock levels on which it falls and is one of the more beautiful and gentle types of falls.
  • Block Waterfall
    • Another one of the thunderous form of falls which flows down its waterline from a wide river or stream.
