Also known locally as Puñalada, it is a species of ground doves in the pigeon and dove family Columbidae. They are among the bleeding-hearts or bird species known for having a red patch on its chest extending down the belly as if there is blood having run down the bird’s chest.

This dove species is endemic to the island of Luzon, hence, the name. It has an iridescent slate grey upper surface which can appear purple, royal blue, or bottle-green, depending on the lighting. Their wings have black bands while their belly and underwing are buff or chestnut.

It feeds on seeds, berries and grubs. They are shy, secretive, very quiet, and rarely leave the ground.

Answer

The binomial name of Luzon bleeding-heart is Gallicolumba luzonica.

Gallicolumba is a genus of ground dives in the pigeon and dove family Columbidae. It is derived from the two Latin terms gallus, which means rooster, which is known to be a ground bird, and columba, which means “dove“.

The specific name luzonica, on the other hand, simply means “of Luzon” in reference to it being endemic to the island of Luzon in the Philippines.

It has three subspecies:

  • Gallicolumba luzonica luzonica
    • Found on the central and southern parts of the island of Luzon and Polilio Islands
  • Gallicolumba luzonica griseolateralis
    • Found on the northern part of the island
  • Gallicolumba luzonica rubiventris
    • A species that can only be found in the island of Catanduanes
