It is a moth species from the moth family Bombycidae. It is one of the economically values insect since these are the primary producer of silk.

Its preferred food are white mulberry leaves though they also feed on other mulberry species.

They are closely dependent on humans for reproduction. This is the effect of millenia of selective breeding.

These species are different from most of its kind in its genus. The differences are that they lost the ability to fly and lost their color pigments.

The specific name mori on the other hand, is a Latin term which means “mulberry” in a sense that it is a genitive singular of mōrus.
