What Is Eudaimonia? About This Greek Term

EUDAIMONIA – In this topic, we are going to know and learn about the Greek term called Eudaimonia ( εὐδαιμονία ).

EUDAIMONIA

Also spelled or anglicized as eudaemonia or eudemonia, it is the Greek word which commonly translates to happiness or welfare. It, however, accurately translates to “human flourishing or prosperity” and “blessedness.”

It is derived from the two words eu (εὐ) or ‘good’ in English, and daimōn (δαιμον) which means spirit.

It is a central concept in Aristotelian ethics and Hellenistic philosophy, in which the latter also include the terms arete, which means “virtue” or “excellence“, and phronesis, which means “practical or ethical wisdom“.

This term was used for “practical or ethical wisdom”, hence, becoming the aim of practical philosophy, which includes ethics and political philosophy.

Plato defines the term as  “The good composed of all goods; an ability which suffices for living well; perfection in respect of virtue; resources sufficient for a living creature.”

The term also implies a positive and divine state of being that humanity is able to strive toward and possibly reach. A literal view of this term means to gain a state of being similar to benevolent deity or being protected and looked over by one.
