Farmers Decided to Give Away Millions Worth of Unsold Veggies to Residents

Farmers freely give away millions worth of unsold veggies to the local government of La Trinidad, Benguet, and given away to the public for free.

According to the report of PNA, it is said that more than 50,000 farmers have been affected due to the lack of tourists and travelers buying their products because of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

The farmers have just distributed millions of worth of vegetables that cannot be sold because there were no buyers coming over to the trading post, so they decided to give it to the local government and distribute them to the residents, said Mayor Romeo Salda,

The fall in the price of vegetables is also a reason for farmers to just donate their crops. He said no one visits the La Trinidad Trading Post to buy vegetables that should be taken to Manila and other parts of Luzon.

Mayor Salad said that as early as April, farmers started distributing their products. He said, at first they gave a sack of rice, a little cash, fuel, and crude oil to somehow recover their investment, but now they no longer receive anything in return for their donation.

The mayor clarified that what they were giving back could not be considered as payment for vegetables donated, but only a little help from the local government.

“It is not payment and not even remuneration for the cost of the vegetables they give. But a little help to them who lost capital for the unsold vegetables,” Salda clarified.

The mayor invited the public to just go to the front of the municipality to get free vegetables. Some vegetables were distributed to some barangays in Baguio City that were locked down.
