DITO To Pay “In Kind” As They Place Cell Sites In Military Camps

DITO To Pay In Kind For Establishing Cell Sites In Military Camps

DITO TO PAY “IN KIND” – Amid worries of a potential trojan horse scenario, the Armed Forces of the Philippines said DITO wouldn’t pay the military in cash.

Concerns began to pile as the Department of National Defense allowed the China-backed DITO telecommunications to penetrate the Philippine Military. According to AFP Spokesperson MGen. Edgard Arevalo, the new telco would instead pay “in kind”.

He said that this would be through services such as training on how to maintain facilities, using new technology, and assistance from information and communications people from DITO. Furthermore, he asserted that even without rental fees, the deal would be “win-win situation”.

According to an article from CNN, he stated:

This is mutually beneficial for telcos at mutually beneficial na rin sa AFP. And of course, ‘yung ibinabayad nila by way of remuneration in case of Globe and Smart. Dito sa case ng Dito Telecommunity, they are going to compensate us in kind – kagaya ng mga training, equipment, upgrade ng ating mga capability

Along with this, the AFP said it also benefits because DITO would help secure the cell sites which are often targeted by communists rebels. He cited that most cell sites in remote areas are being extorted and that the owners were being asked for “protection money”.

Moreover, he emphasized that the deal wasn’t only for DITO. He explained that they had the same deal with the two biggest telcos in the country, Globe and Smart.

When we talk about military camps, we don’t necessarily mean at the heart of these military camps. May mga kampo tayo na malalaki ang reservations at pwedeng doon ‘yan ilalagay, he said.
