What Is Literature? Definition, Forms And Types

LITERATURE – In this topic, we are going to know and learn about literature, its meaning, forms and types, and the meanings of each.

Definition

The term refers to all forms written or oral, and usually refers to writings that are considered to be an art form. It is derived from the Latin litteratura, which is from littera, which means “letter”.

Types

There are two types:

  • Fiction
    • This type is usually fabricated and is based on the imagination of the author. Examples of fiction are short stories, novels, myths, legends, and fairy tales, among others.
  • Non-Fiction
    • In contrast, this type is factual and reports on true events. Examples of non-fiction include histories, biographies, journalism, and essays.

Forms

There are two forms:

  • Prose
    • This refers to one of the literary forms which has no formal metrical structure since it applies a natural flow of speech, and ordinary grammatical structure, rather than rhythmic structure, which is found in poetry.
  • Poetry
    • This type is is an interplay of words and rhythm. The form includes rhythm and meter, in which rhythm demonstrates the long and short patterns through stressed and unstressed syllables, particularly in verse form, while meter is a set of rules governing the number and arrangement of syllables in each line.
