Roque Give Statement Regarding Thailand Issue
ROQUE ON THAILAND ISSUE – Recently, a news outlet in Thailand published a report where the Philippines was tagged as the “land of COVID-19”.
Last week, the Philippines surpassed Indonesia with the most number of COVID-19 cases. However, this week, the country cemented its place at the top with close to 7,000 new cases recorded within a day.
But, despite the labeling of the local newspaper, Thai Rath, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque urged the Filipino public to be more understanding. He said that because Thailand doesn’t have free speech, there’s nothing much to criticize in their country.
According to an article from Inquirer, Roque said that we should understand Thailand as the Philippines also values freedom of speech and the free market of ideas.
Currently, the Philippines has over 136,638 cases of COVID-19, the biggest number of cases in South East Asia. Yesterday, the health department reported 6,958 cases of the deadly disease with 2,294 deaths and 68,159 recoveries.
Due to the explosive number of cases, President Duterte imposed a Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ) on Metro Manila and four neighboring provinces until August 18.
