CHALLENGE ACCEPTED – The tragic story of Pinar Gültekin is the story that started the black and white “Challenge Accepted” posts trending online.
Pinar Gültekin, 27 years old, is a student from Mugla in Turkey and the artsy black-and-white photos of women with the caption “Challenge Accepted” started because of her tragic end. The trending post has been circulating since last week but actually, this movement has started way back 2016.
The end of Pinar was tragic and was done in a brutal way by her ex-boyfriend Cemal Metin Avci, 32 years old. Her refusal to get back to him was the reason behind the crime. She was beaten and strangled to death. He put her dead body inside a barrel which he burned and filled with cement. Cemal admitted the crime when the authorities recovered a CCTV of him buying fuel.
The remains of Pinar was discovered in a forest in Mugla on July 21 which is 5 days after her family reported she was missing. And this was the start of the movement. Pinar is one of the many women killed in femicide crimes. The World Health Organization described this as “intentional murder of women because they are women.”
The black and white photos is to show support for all the femicide victims to which the monochromatic photos of these victims are oftentimes the one posted in television. The American University Turkish Cultural Club explained:
“Turkish people wake up every day to see a black-and-white photo of a woman who has been murdered on their Instagram feed, on their newspapers, on their TV screens. The black and white photo challenge started as a way for women to raise their voice. To stand in solidarity with the women we have lost.”
