According to Inquirer, Department of Labor and Employment secretary Silvestre Bello III said that more than three thousand establishments had a temporary shutdown while 200 others have permanently closed since January.

The temporary closure of the said establishments prompted President Duterte to place Luzon under lockdown in the middle of March. This is in order to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Bello added that he would meet with senators in order to talk about how the department could maintain its COVID-19 Adjustment Measures Program which aims to provide cash aid to displaced workers in the formal sector.

The labor secretary said that he was banking on the BPO sector and the public works and transportation projects of the government in order to generate more jobs and help the economy bounce back.

Based on the report, Department of Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III called for the opening of the economy, especially in Metro Manila and CALABARZON, saying that the Filipinos should learn to live with the new reality that COVID-19 will not go away anytime soon and “live with it for a long period of time.”

The finance secretary added that Metro Manila and CALABARZON should move to modified general community quarantine as soon as possible because people have to start working.
