According to PhilStarm the cops seized 200 kilograms of ammonium nitrate and components which are used to make improvised bombs for dynamite fishing.

Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region director Police Brigadier General Manuel Abu saud that the operatives from Lantawan municipal police led by Police Captain Said Omar Ismael discovered the said materials in a hut on a beach in Barangay Matikang.

In most places in the world, including the Philippines, dynamite fishing is considered. The said practice is considered is one of the most destructive forms of fishing because it indiscriminately kills any animal in the blast area, according to the UN Environment Programme.

Basilan Governor Jim Salliman said that he is grateful to the personnel of the Lantawan municipal police station for the immediate confiscation of dynamite fishing materials.

“The seized materials and blasting charges for fishing dynamites can also be used as tactical explosives if it gets to the hands of terrorists. Good enough we don’t have them in Basilan anymore,”

Based on the report, barangay residents said that they reported a group of transient fishermen kept dynamite in Sitio Hansipak Subah, Barangay Matikang.

Police also recovered eight sacks of ammonium nitrate that were sold as plant fertilizer, detonation primers and ignition fuses.

The seized materials are also more than enough improvised explosive devices that could destroy a five-storey building or military vehicles.
