Within the story, we could see how she portrayed certain characters as people who lacked authenticity who placed themselves on such a high pedestal.
Furthermore, the story expresses how one should not let pride envelope one’s personality. This was important as “Pride” could also be derived from the divisions created from class and wealth. We see this all the time in our daily lives as some people place themselves at a higher level than others.
Moreover, you could also see a glimpse of the shallow nature of a society that dwells in the concepts of capitalism that view wealth as a core priority.
Even Ms. Benette herself prioritized wealth as one of her standards for an eligible bachelor for her daughters. In fact, she even pushed her daughters (to a degree) to marry the young rich bachelors who moved nearby.
