Also primarily known as Indian peafowl and blue peafowl, it is a bird native to the Indian subcontinent.

The male is brightly coloured, with a blue fan-like crest of spatula-tipped wire-like feathers. The male is best known for the long train which is composed of elongated upper-tail covert feathers which bear colorful eyespots.

The species lives mainly on land in open forest or land under cultivation where they hunt for berries and grains, as well as snakes, lizards, and small rodents.

The binomial name of Indian peafowl is Pavo cristatus.

Pavo is genus of two species in the pheasant family Phasianidae. The other species under this genus is Pavo muticus or the Green peafowl. Pavo is Latin for peacock.

The species name christatus is also a Latin term which means “crested“. It is derived from the term  crista which means “the comb or tuft on the head of animals” in this case.
