Celebrating Independence With A Mañanita Protest
PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE – Activists across the Philippines came together in the biggest part– Mañanita protest against the Anti-Terrorism Bill.
The controversial bill drew flack due to provisions that activists say may potentially be used against critics of the government. Furthermore, with the bill passed, authorities are now allowed to conduct warantless arrests.
So, in honor of Police Chief Debold Sinas’ birthday celebration, the activist called their gathering a “Mañanita”.

Armed with colorful banners, pictures of food, and other objects seen at Sinas’ birthday, the activists took to the streets to voice their concerns. Here are some of the images of the event taken by News5.
Other groups came complete with Karaoke machines, and even colorful banners and a party hat! Much like Sinas’ Mañanita celebration.
But of course, a Mañanita isn’t complete without the celebrant! So, local artist and activist Mae Paner channeled her inner Debold Sinas and cosplayed the former birthday celebrant.
However, there were already riot police stationed at some universities in the entrance of UP Cebu who were waiting for the scheduled Mañanita to start.
But, as per the instructions under the social distancing protocols, the activist made sure to maintain at least 6 feet of distance from one another.
The term Mañanita was recently popularized by Debold Sinas who argued that his birthday wasn’t a party but a “Mañanita” with over 50 guest.
