CHR Welcomes PNP Chief’s Warning Against Cops Red-tagging on Social Media
The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) welcomes the warning of the Philippine National Police (PNP) chief’s against cops over social media violations.
CHR Spokesperson Atty. Jacqueline Ann de Guia said this reminder made by Gamboa to his fellow officers is a “welcome” development in terms of human rights, based on the report of GMA News.
“Duty bearers like members of the law enforcement are bound by high standards of ethics and professionalism in carrying out their mandate,” she said.
The social media accounts should be used by police to spread accurate and reliable information to the public, especially in the case of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, De Guia said.
“In the sea of disinformation online, social media content of government offices must only forward genuine public interest and must never be used to malign any individual or cause any harm to anyone with baseless accusations,” she said.
The CHR hopes that the PNP Chief’s call for social media violations will remove any other acts that compromise people’s rights. As such, the Commission expects the police agency to be empowered to implement existing protocols.
“We echo the call of the PNP chief and hope that such actions that might compromise the rights of a person would be avoided in the future with the agency’s commitment to strictly enforce its existing protocols,” she added.
