Daniel Radcliffe went against Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling
Actor Daniel Radcliffe reacted to the tweets of J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter book series, regarding gender identity.
In her series of tweets, dated June 7, Rowling spoke her mind on the issue on gender identity with stressing on point that there should be a distinction when it comes to gender of people.
“I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of se# removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth,” she said. The world-renowned author also said that it is not hateful to say that her life has been shaped by being a female.
These tweets of Rowling received a response from Radcliffe through a blog post. The actor was the one who played the titular role of the movie adaptation from the author’s book series.
Radcliffe stressed that people should not view his reaction as an “in-fighting between” him and Rowling. However, he feels that he is compelled to speak something regarding this matter.
“Transgender women are women. Any statement to the contrary erases the identity and dignity of transgender people and goes against all advice given by professional health care associations who have far more expertise on this subject matter than either Jo or I,” he said.
He added that people need to do a lot of things in order to support transgender and nonbinary individuals. Invalidating their identities is not needed, according to Radcliffe.
He also clarified that his reactions to what the author tweeted has no intention to tarnish the experience of people reading the books. “I am deeply sorry for the pain these comments have caused you. I really hope that you don’t entirely lose what was valuable in these stories to you,” he added.
Daniel Radcliffe also encouraged readers of the books to hang on the inspiration and motivation they got from reading the stories. “It means to you what it means to you and I hope that these comments will not taint that too much,” the actor said.
