WHO Emergency Director Warns COVID-19 May Never Go Away

HERE TO STAY – According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) emergencies director, COVID-19 may never go away.

The world continues to battle against the spread of COVID-19. As such, researchers are racing to find a vaccine for the new deadly coronavirus.

Recently, potential cures for the disease such as Remdesivir have begun human testings. Meanwhile, more alternative research such as using nanobodies from llamas are also underway.

However, according to WHO emergencies director Dr. Mike Ryan, controlling the virus would take a massive effort. Moreover, he emphasized that the virus may just become endemic in the community. This means that the virus may never go away.

A similar case has happened with HIV. The virus is still prevalent in the community. Although, Dr. Ryan noted that people have now come to terms with the virus.

In lieu of this daunting possibility, Dr. Ryan warned against those predicting the end of the coronavirus. He noted that he doesn’t believe anybody could tell when COVID-19 could disappear.

According to an article from the BBC, WHO epidemiologist Maria Van Kerkhove stated:
“We need to get into the mindset that it is going to take some time to come out of this pandemic.

Currently, there are over 100 potential vaccines for COVID-19 being developed and researched. But, Dr. Ryan noted that several illnesses such as measles are still around despite having vaccines developed for them.

The stern remarks from WHO comes as several countries have begun easing their lockdown protocols. Likewise, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted there was no guaranteed way of easing lockdowns without triggering another wave of the virus.
