DepEd has clearer orders regarding the school opening on August 24

The Department of Education (DepEd) has released a statement regarding the school opening that is set to take place on August 24, as well as about various school activities.

Amid the enhanced community quarantine due to the health crisis in the Philippines, the education department also made several adjustments. The 2019-2020 academic year ended earlier than it was scheduled. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, graduation rites were also canceled.

As the country is still battling against the deadly virus, DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones, in a press briefing on May 11, talked about the Learning Continuity Plan (LCP) and the school calendar for School Year (SY) 2020-2021.

She said the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Disease (IATF) has adopted the LCP and that private schools are allowed to start the classes earlier than August 24 but no face-to-face classes earlier than the said date.

Meanwhile, the education department reiterated that it does not mean that face-to-face classes are necessary on August 24. It will depend on the COVID-19 situation in every local area which will be possible, meeting virtually or physically.

Briones also enumerated possible options that schools can do in order to conduct classes such as virtual or distance learning, online learning, and blended learning – depending on local situations, based on Manila Bulletin’s report.

Regarding the academic events that would require the gathering of a big crowd, those will be canceled. This includes activities such as journalism, sports, science fair, talent events.

Furthermore, the education secretary said that the DepEd continues to address arising problems in the basic education through the LCP that will take effect on August 24 for the academic year 2020-2021 as the country continue to fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The said program of the education department is its way to respond to ensure the safety, health, and well-being of students as well as teachers and personnel of schools.
