According to SunStar, Department of Trade and Industry – Davao director Rachel Remitio said that they are conducting daily monitoring and enforcement activities to more than 40 establishments in the city, among those were 27 that were issued letters of inquiry as of May 7.

The identity of these establishments were undisclosed but among those were supermarkets within malls, and those with standalone branches.

The letter of inquiry from the department were given to these establishments that allegedly sell overpriced items and not under the retail price in accordance to the Joint Memorandum Circular No. 2020-01, also known as “Price Freeze under a State of Calamity throughout the Philippines due to the Coronavirus Disease 2019” of the FTI, the Department of Agriculture (DA), and Department of Health (DOH).

“They are given 72 hours to explain in writing why they exceeded their price rate,”

This would then be forwarded to the central office for confirmation.

As per the report, those who will fail to comply with the order will be filed with a notice of violation. This would also be issued to the establishments if their claims and receipts from the distributor are rendered unreasonable and invalid.

However, no closure was ordered in any establishments after some of them immediately complied with the price range after they failed to show proof of their price increase.

The DTI-Davao director said that they will still observe other establishments to ensure that they are compliant with the guidelines.
