Language has evolved immensely since the earliest days of man. Before language was symbolic, each symbol represented something known in the world.
And, one of the earliest people to use language as a form of art was the Greeks. However, the Greeks hardly had any punctuation’s. Furthermore, they even changed the direction of what they were writing at the end of each line.
Following that, they changed their way of writing and favored people who were right handed. Next, people would showed where a new paragraph was by drawing an underline of the fist line.
Next, the Greek playwright Aristophanes invented the use of marks to signify to the readers that they should take a breath.
Meanwhile, the Romans made writing easier to read. They did this by placing dots between words. Also, they moved the first letter of a paragraph into the left margin. They even adapted the use of colon marks from the Greeks to signal phrase endings.
But, in the early Middle Ages, the use of punctuation’s broke down due to people being unable to read and write. As such, writers used spaces at the end of a sentence and continued to mark paragraphs.
Eventually, words were separated again and again to cater to the illiterate until new sentences began with a larger letter.
