Retailers, Supermarkets Encouraged To Hire Temporary, Part-Time Employees Amid Pandemic
RETAILERS – Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel encourages big supermarkets and retailers in the country to hire part-time and temporary employees amid the COVID-19 crisis.
The 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) is changing how we live our lives. Most people now work in their homes while others still trying to figure out how they could earn money from home.
Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte only extended the “enhanced community quarantine” (ECQ) in high-risk areas. Cities and provinces that have low COVID-19 cases are under “general community quarantine” (GCQ).
GCQ is more relaxed compared to ECQ. Mass transportation and businesses are allowed to resume but with limited capacity.
In a previous article, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said more than 2 million Filipino workers were displaced by the coronavirus pandemic. NCR has the highest number of displaced workers.
Based on a report from RMN, Deputy Speaker and Surigao del Sur Representative Johnny Pimentel encourage big supermarkets and retailers in the country to part-time and temporary employees from different fields amid the COVID-19 crisis. He adopted the idea from the US.
One of the biggest retail corporations in the US hired 200,000 part-time and temporary workers amid the pandemic. Pimentel explained that the retailers are the only businesses open during the pandemic because they sell essentials or basic needs of the people.
According to the report, Johnny Pimentel said this would really help a lot of people that are struggling right now. He said retailers and supermarkets should add more employees because lots of people lost their jobs because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The politician said they could hire more cashiers, baggers, stockers, men for distribution and delivery, and warehousing. Pimentel also encourages private-sector employers to help the government by giving more jobs to the people.
