Brgy. Volunteer Prohibits Medical Nurse to Enter Village Due to COVID-19 Scare
CEBU CITY – a barangay volunteer earns criticism online after prohibiting medical nurse to enter residence due to COVID-19 scare.
Amid pandemic crisis the country facing these days due to rampant coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Health workers, among the frontliners during the coronavirus outbreak in the Philippines, are risking their lives in order to fulfill their duties.
However, Health workers and frontliners are facing discrimination because of their job. There are people who are disrespecting them while others discriminate them, worst is some are hurting them.
Recently, in Cebu City, a medical nurse came home after the duty was halted by barangay volunteer and prohibits her from entering the village due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19) scare.
According to the video, the volunteer manning the check-up point said that he was only concern for the residents living in the area that might get contracted because she, the nurse, came from the hospital.
It can be also heard on the video that another man shouted “Day, pangita’g balay day, palit og balay imo, condominium, subdivision.” (Day, find new home day, change your location, condominium, subdivision.)
The city of Cebu has passed an ordinance that refuses to discriminate against frontliners. The “The Frontliners Protection Ordinance of Cebu” was enacted on April 1. A fine of P1,000 for the first offense is found to be in violation, P3,000 in the second, and P5,000 in the third.
Meanwhile, the Cebu City Legal Office through City Attorney Rey Gealon said Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella has already ordered an investigation into the incident. Gealon added that he hired a team of three lawyers to assist the police in preparing the nurse’s complaint-affidavit, including supporting affidavits.
Meanwhile, the video has earned various reactions from the netizens after it has gone viral on social media. Netizens condemn and air dismay towards the discrimination.
