According to an article from Atlas Obscura, the photo was taken by National Geographic photographer, Charles O’Rear. The photographer was driving through Sonoma to visit his girlfriend in San Francisco.

But, even though he’s been through this route several times before, this time, the view caught his attention. He said that the grass was especially greener after the winter had past.

Above, you could see beautiful dotted, white fluffy clouds. Naturally, O’Rear quickly got his camera and used a Fujifilm Velvia film used by nature photographers. Afterward, he uploaded his photo to “Corbis”, a stock photo site backed by Bill Gates.

In 2000, Microsoft contacted O’Rear and asked if they could buy his picture to be used in their latest operating system. Following this, O’Rear sold the rights to Microsoft for an undisclosed some and delivered the photos to Microsoft in Person.

Since then, billions of users from across the globe have started their days staring at this beautiful picture. As per the article, people come to photograph the same spot O’Rear shot.
