NEGATIVE IMPERATIVE – In this article, we are going to discuss and show examples on how to use negative imperatives.

First, we need to understand what imperatives are. Generally, imperatives are used to emphasize that an action must be done urgently. As such, imperatives are a means to say something is of vital or crucial importance.

Additionally, it could also be used as a suggestion or simply, a command. Meanwhile, negative imperatives are created by simply adding “don’t” before the verb.

For example:

1. If you want to stay alive during the coronavirus pandemic, don’t go outside.
2. Don’t go breaking my heart, darling, it’s the only one I got.
3. Sam, Don’t do that if you want me to stay.

If you look closely, the way we used negative imperatives are somewhat in a suggestive form. However, negative imperatives may sometimes come off as a bit impolite and harsh.

We could offset that by adding “please” at the end of the sentences. For example:

1. Don’t come near me, please.
2. Peter, don’t drop the glass, please.
3. Don’t leave me, please.
