DILG Warns Lockdown Violators, Says More Arrests Will Be Done

More Arrests For Quarantine & Lockdown Violators Warns DILG

MORE ARRESTS – The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) warns lockdown violators of “many arrests”.

As the Philippines continued to fight against the coronavirus, several countermeasures were imposed to flatten its spread. One of these measures was placing Luzon under an Extended Community Quarantine.

As such, gatherings of large crowds, public transportation, and non-essential businesses were extended. However, there are still some who take the risk and opt to break the quarantine protocol.

In lieu of this, DILG Secretary Eduardo Año stated during a DZMM interview that they’re sure to arrest more people. Additionally, more policemen would be deployed at checkpoints and hunt down illegal activities such as:

  • Illegal cockfighting matches
  • Gambling
  • Drinking on the streets
  • Large gatherings
  • Other lockdown breaches

Due to reports of lockdown violations, President Duterte called on the army and the police to prepare to take over. Meanwhile, Año stated that as of this moment, they are on top of the situation.

According to a report from ABS-CBN, soldiers and police had to disperse shoppers who flocked to the Balintawak Market.

Furthermore, Año stated that the lifting of the lockdown would depend on the trend of COVID-19 cases, capacity of health facilities, and the economy. More importantly, the DILG secretary said that it would depend on social factor and public disicipline.

Kung sakaling magluluwag na tayo, iyong disiplina sa mga tao ang dapat naging habit or instinct na. For the whole 2020 hanggang wala pang bakuna, kakaharapin natin itong virus

(If things get lighter, discipline amongst residents should become a habit and instinct. For the whole 2020 up till an antivirus is found, we would still face the virus).
