Vietnam Sets Up ‘Rice ATM’ for Donations and Gives Free Rice

A city in Vietnam set up a ‘Rice ATM’ that accepts donations from kind residents and provides free rice to poor residents affected by COVID-19.

Donors in the central city of Hue have set up a ‘rice ATM’ in the city to help underprivileged people that have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. A machine that dispense free rice instead of money.

In Hanoi, rice contained in a large water tank the pours out into resident’s plastic bags from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, according to state-run news agency VNA.  the machine provides 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) of free rice for local residents in need.

The supply of rice to the water tanks depends on the kindness of donors. Volunteers from colleges and other kind-hearted donors have continue to supply and filling up the ATM.  Vietnam’s association Ha Duc Hung has recently collected over 40 tonnes of rice from donors in the city, and are still planning to gather more.

Meanwhile, Vietnam has 265 cases of coronavirus disease and zero deaths, significantly lower than the rest of the world. But nonetheless, to prevent further spread, the government implements precautionary measures, effectively closing many small businesses that leaves thousands to jobless.
