CATASTROPHIC EVENTS – Krakatoa Volcano Erupts in Indonesia, Iceland’s Reykjanes Volcanic Activity Rises
The volcanic activity in Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula rises and Krakatoa Volcano in Indonesia has erupted in just a span of few hours.
On Friday evening (April 10, 2020 – Indonesian Time), the infamous Krakatoa volcano, Anak Krakatau has erupted generating huge plume of smoke and ashes as well as fountains of lava. The volcano spews ash plumes as high as 15 kilometers.
The scientists described the eruption as the strongest eruptive phase following the violent phreatomagmatic activity that happened last December 2018. Krakatoa Volcano also erupted in 1883 generating a 420meter high tsunami that killed 36,000 people.
On Saturday (April 11, 2020), the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland shows increasing volcanic activity and might cause disruptions. The peninsula is reportedly showing signs of unrest for not having an eruption in 800 years.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) that the volcanoes around the region are becoming active as the land uplifts of about 10 centimeters. The agency explained that it was due to magma intrusions.
IMO staff Kristín Jónsdóttir said that the possible eruptions could cause a serious danger since there is a geothermal power plant in the nearby town of Grindavik. Reykjavík’s metropolitan area and the international airport could be affected if eruption happens.
