For example:

1 4 7 – One digit is right but is in the wrong place.

1 8 9 – One digit is right and in the right place.

9 6 4 – Two digits are right but in the wrong place.

5 2 3 – All digits are wrong.

2 8 6 – One digit is right but in the wrong place.

What are the three numbers?

First, you need to understand the statements, this is your clue to make the problem easier. Next, you just need a little bit of elimination.

Afterward, you need to look at the 1st statement and compare it to the 2nd statement. There, you could already eliminate the wrong numbers.

In the two statements, one digit is right. That means the number 1 couldn’t be the number because if 1 was right, then it contradicts the second statement.

Then, look at the 4th statement, 5 2 3 are all wrong numbers. That means we could eliminate those numbers. Afterward, go to the 5th statement, eliminate the number 2, and compare it to the 2nd statement.

There, we could conclude that the number 8 is also a wrong number, since if it was right, then the second statement would be false.

That means, number “9” is the first of the three numbers and is in the right place. The second number would be “6” since we would’ve eliminated “2” and “8” from statement 5.

With that, we take a look back at the 3rd statement. Since we know 9 and 6 are part of the two right numbers, we can eliminate number “4”.

Lastly, we go back to the first statement, which leaves the number “7” as the right number. However, two of the numbers, 7 and 6, are still in the wrong place.

  1. The problem’s last statement reads:-
2 8 6 – One digit is right but in the wrong place.
but in your solution, the last statement reads More than once):-
    2 8 6 – One digit is right and in it’s place.
No wonder I was confused. 🙂
