German State Finance Minister Ends Life Over COVID-19 ‘Despair’

German state finance minister took his own life

Due to “despair” over the COVID-19 situation, Thomas Schaefer, a German state finance minister ended his own life.

Schaefer, 54, was the finance minister of Hesse state got “deeply worried” about the status of the economy amid crisis due to the novel coronavirus disease 2019, a report from Aljazeera stated.

He is situated in the financial capital of Germany, Frankfurt. It is also where the headquarters of major lenders such as the Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank are located.

The finance minister was found dead near a railway track on Saturday. The office of Wiesbaden prosecution believed that Schaefer took his own life. Authorities said that there are several factors that led them to this conclusion and that included the statements from witnesses and what they observed in the scene.

“We are in shock, we are in disbelief and above all we are immensely sad,” state premier Volker Bouffier said. He also recalled the time that the German state finance minister was working tirelessly in order to help companies and workers cope up with the result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

“Today we have to assume that he was deeply worried. It’s precisely during this difficult time that we would have needed someone like him,” the state premier also said.

Based on the report, there had been expectations that Schaefer would assume the position of Bouffier. Both of them belong to the CDU party of Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The wife and two children of the finance minister mourn over his unexpected death.

According to the information from worldometer.info, as of March 30, the total number of coronavirus cases in Germany reached 62,435 with 541 deaths while 9, 211 have recovered.
