Crime Rate In Metro Manila Down To 60% Amid COVID-19 Quarantine
CRIMINALS ON THE LOW – Amid the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon, Metro Manila saw a significant decrease in crime rate by 60%.-
The National Capital Region Police Office reported that crimes in the metro decreased by 65.4% for five days. This was compared to the same period (March 15 – 20 ) of last year.
According to a report from GMA, the NCRPO chief Police Major General Debold Sinas attributed the decline to the general public staying indoors. With a virus amidst the population, people are not taking chances.
Meanwhile, in a comparative crime statistic released by the NCRPO murder went down by 30%. Additionally, homicide rates lowered to 33%. Furthermore, physical injuries were decreased by 73%.
Crimes of sexual violence also dropped to 78%. Also, the robbery and theft rate was reduced to 64% with carnapping of motorcycles dropping by 58% and carjacking by 75%.
As per the report, the NCRPO emphasized that they had enough personal protective equipment (PPE) for personnel in charge of quarantine checkpoints such as face masks, helmets, disinfectants, portable toilets, and tents.
With the enhanced community quarantine and fears of exposure to the virus, the majority of the public had decided to stay indoors for the duration of the quarantine.
In addition, crime rates at night also lowered due to curfews implemented by the government. However, there are still some individuals who break curfew in order to go out drinking.
Currently, COVID-19 has infected more than 275,570 individuals worldwide. Additionally, the virus caused 11,388 fatalities. However, 91,533 have already recovered.
