This time, one of the latest infected patient was a male resident from Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, the first confirmed COVID-19 case in the Visayas.

According to a report from Panay News, the patient was 62 years old. Additionally, the patient was admitted to the Ace Dumaguete Doctors hospital.

In Luzon, several new cases were confirmed. Currently, there 49 confirmed cases in the Philippines. As such, President Duterte had declared a public health emergency.

Meanwhile, the confirmed case in Dumaguete was reported to have a travel history to Greenhills Shopping Center in San Juan City, Metro Manila. There, the DOH had confirmed two cases of COVID-19.

In lieu of this, DOH assistant secretary Ma. Rosario Vergeire said health authorities have conducted contact tracing of the Visayan case.

Within the last days, the Philippines had experienced a sudden spike of confirmed cases. According to Vergeire, this could be attributed to DOH’s improved monitoring systems.

Likewise, the government had implemented several countermeasures against the virus. This ranged from travel bans to banning students from loitering in public places.

However, some residents were still in disarray following the reports. People have been reported panic buying necessities like alcohol and face masks.

But, some merely engage in this activity to earn a profit. This led to some stores implementing a “1 alcohol per person” policy to put a stop to the hoarding.

Some see the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines as an opportunity to monetize fear. However, people need to understand that in order to contain the virus, EVERYONE must have access to supplies such as alcohol.
