South Korea had been struggling to contain COVID-19 which was believed to have started in a church in the city of Daegu. Because of the spread, the country has been placed under RED ALERT, the highest alert for infectious disease.

Amid the increasing cases of coronavirus in South Korea, the Philippine government has decided not to allow Filipino tourists to fly to the country in the meantime. This included the popular Jeju island.

In addition, travelers from North Gyeongsang are not allowed to enter the country as part of the precautionary measures against the coronavirus.

Now, Japan is being considered to be included in the Philippines’ travel ban list. In an interview with DZMM, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said if Japan fits their criteria, the task force would make the decision.

Japan had confirmed at least 186 cases of COVID-19. Along with this, it also had 8 fatalities caused by the virus, four of which passed away after contracting the virus aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship.

According to Duque, one of the criteria for the travel ban would be the situation of local transmission of COVID-19 in a country. Another is if the country has a high volume of tourists.

Meanwhile, the Inter-agency Task Force (IATF) on Emerging Infectious Diseases would conduct a risk assessment of the current situation in South Korea. Afterward, they would decide if a wider travel ban on the country is necessary.
