P90k Worth Kaning Tutong Wins Art Fair Philippines 2020
“Dukot Survival” an art installation using preserved scorched rice or Kaning Tutong and plastic human figures wins at Art Fair Philippines 2020.
Burnt rice isn’t what you’d typically expect to see at a premier art exhibition like Art Fair Philippines. But that’s exactly what Visayan media artist Manny Montelibano is showcasing for art gallery 1335Mabini’s exhibition space.
Recently, photos of scorched rice or “Kaning Tutong” in Filipinos went viral and earned various reactions from netizens after seen it was for sale in states. The scorched rice with packaging and price tag found at $ 7.58 or the equivalent of P384.73 in the Philippines.
Meanwhile, Manny Montelibano – a Visayan media artist – is the mastermind behind the so-called “Dukot Survival” worth P90,000, as Esquire reported.
“Dukot Survival is an installation work composed of preserved rice with small plastic human figures inserted between the grains and five multi-colored vitrines,” said 1335 Mabini on their Facebook page. It also added that the “Dukot” is a Hiligaynon word that refers to the “Kaning Tutong” or overcooked rice that takes its form from the used pot.
“Dukot is presented as an artifact of the upcoming past, the forthcoming old society. As humanity strives toward a more balanced world, civilizations leave behind evidences of how people live,” they explained further. “This is a reflection of how people evolve by adapting to the demands of society. It also reflects the disappearance of a society, the fading values, and the vanishing traditions, which can also result in modern evolutionary synthesis.”
Meanwhile, netizens have expressed their different point of view on this. The photo has gone viral on social media as netizens are wowed by the value of neglected rice.
