WORD PARTS – In this topic, we are going to learn parts of a word and other things you need to know about it.

Basically, there are times that we want to learn the word by taking it apart in order to learn the clear meaning of it. Basically, there are two types:
- Base Word
- also known as root words, it is basically the source or basis that is about to be added by prefixes and suffixes in order to form a new one.
- Affixes
- The general term for prefixes and suffixes. This is what you add to the base in order to make a new one. There are two types:
- Prefixes
- a part that is added at the beginning of the base
- Suffixes
- Similar to prefixes but they are added to the end of the base

Note that when you add a suffix, it changes the meaning of the word. For example, untie is a combination of the base “tie” and the prefix “un-” which means “not”, Hence meaning of untie is “not tie”.
