Australia Challenges Claim That Indonesia Is Still Wuhan Virus Free
IS INDONESIA WUHAN VIRUS-FREE? – As the outbreak of the Wuhan coronavirus remained rampant in China, several countries around the world have had cases of infection in their country.
The outbreak of the coronavirus had caused the deaths of more than 1,100 people globally. Along with this, there were 43,000 confirmed cases worldwide.
Even majorly developed ones like the United States and Canada have had cases of the virus. However, Indonesia had none so far.
This led some Australian infectious disease experts to wonder if their claim was true. According to them, Indonesia may potentially have numerous “undetected” cases of coronavirus.
Based on a report from SBS, Indonesia’s health ministry declared the country had no recorded cases of the coronavirus. It added that the 238 evacuated from Wuhan showed no symptoms.
However, a new study conducted by Harvard University discovered the lack of cases identified in Indonesia and Cambodia, which only had one case, were much lower than expected.
The study was based on findings in the number of passengers landing from Wuhan. In addition, it cited the tourism and trade link between the neighboring countries.
There was an estimated two million Chinese tourists holiday in Indonesia annually. Many of them were in the Australian holiday hotspot Bali.
In lieu of this, Associate Professor Sanjaya Senanayake, stated:
It may well be the case, that they’ve detected no cases of coronavirus, it all depends on the ability of the health service to screen and detect
But, it’s possible there may be cases they don’t yet know about. We know a lot of people who are infected may only have a very minor infection and they may not be turning up at a hospital.
She emphasized that due to the high traffic of travel between China and Indonesia, it’s possible that there could be numerous cases circulating.
