HK Health Officials Say Coronavirus Transmission Through Pipes Possible
CORONAVIRUS TRANSMISSION THROUGH PIPES – Previously, the method of transmission of the Wuhan coronavirus was through direct contact with saliva or droplets from sneezing or coughing from someone infected.
However, health officials in Hong Kong are now investigating a new possible method of transmission.
In a previous article, we learned that transmission through the fecal route may be possible. Scientists noted that some patients infected with the virus had diarrhea instead of a fever.
This meant that an oral-fecal transmission route could be possible. Previously, the mode of transmission was only known to be through virus-laden droplets from sick people infected with the virus.
Officials have evacuated residents from an apartment block due to the possibility that the coronavirus could be transmitted through the buildings piping system.
According to an article from CNN, officials have tracked at least two confirmed cases of the coronavirus to an apartment building called Hong Mei House. This was located in the Tsing Yi area of Hong Kong.
Professor KY Yuen stated in an impromptu midnight press conference Tuesday morning:
As the pipeline that transfers feces is connected to the air pipe, it is very likely for the virus in the feces to be transmitted through the air fan into the toilet
As per the report, parts of the apartment were evacuated. Meanwhile, health officials and engineers made emergency checks.
However, Yuen stated that the transmissions methods of the confirmed cases were not yet certain. Following this, he added that the evacuation was ordered to protect residents of the building.
